The Three C’s of Civilian Self-Defence
By Alan Mann — www.learn-krav-maga.co.za
Krav Maga was born out of real conflict. Forged in battle, refined for the streets. While its roots are military, its purpose today is to help ordinary people deal with extraordinary situations. At Krav Maga CQC Academy, we teach practical, no-nonsense self-defence based on three guiding principles: Clear, Control, Counter. Simple to remember, especially when things go pear-shaped.
-
Clear — Move to safety first
Military: Move; find cover out of line of incoming fire.
Civilian: Identify the attack (fist, stick, knife, or firearm) and get out of its path…… fast.
Your first job is not to look heroic; it is to stay alive. Whether that means stepping aside, ducking behind a car, or creating distance, Clear means moving with purpose, not panic. In the military, we might call this “relocating with enthusiasm” Civilians can call it common sense.
-
Control — Take charge of the chaos
Military: Suppress the enemy with heavy return fire and regain the initiative.
Civilian: Control the assailant and, ideally, the weapon.
Once you are out of immediate danger, it is time to stabilize the situation. Control means limiting the threat by blocking, parrying, or securing the attacker, with aggression. You are not there to wrestle for bragging rights; you are there to end the danger long enough to escape, call for help, or, if necessary, return the favour, decisively.
-
Counter — End the threat
Military: Neutralize the enemy, follow up on the control with fire and movement.|
Civilian: Deliver targeted, effective strikes to stop further aggression.
If escape isn’t an option, Counter quickly and effectively. Krav Maga focuses on high-percentage techniques that work when adrenaline’s high and fine motor skills have ‘gone on holiday’. Hit hard, hit smart, and get to safety.
Bringing it together
The Clear–Control–Counter framework keeps things simple when your brain wants to freeze. It is easy to remember, brutally effective, and designed to help you survive.
At Krav Maga CQC Academy, we drill these stages until they are instinctive through realistic, scenario-based training that builds confidence, awareness, and a healthy respect for Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong, will — so; train so that does not.”
